The Ellis County Courthouse and the faces carved into its walls
1897
Waxahachie, Texas

James Riely Gordon designed the red sandstone and granite courthouse that has anchored the Waxahachie square since 1897, and stone masons covered its columns and arches with human faces, some serene and some grotesque. A local legend explains the ugly ones as the work of a carver whose courtship went badly, though nothing documents it. The building has done duty on film for decades, most famously in Places in the Heart, which was shot around Waxahachie in late 1983 and won Sally Field an Academy Award.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
