The Dish goes up on the ridge
1966
Stanford foothills, California
A hundred-and-fifty-foot radio telescope on a grass ridge above campus, built to bounce signals off the moon and study the upper atmosphere, still used to talk to spacecraft. The loop of service road around it became the most reliably crowded walk on the peninsula, which is not what anybody designed it for.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
