The Denton County courthouse and the Confederate soldier taken off its lawn
1896

W. C. Dodson built the county's courthouse in 1896 out of four different Texas stones, with limestone from Denton itself and pink granite columns cut near Burnet. The United Daughters of the Confederacy put a Confederate soldier on the south lawn in 1918, and it stood there through a fight that ran for twenty one years. Commissioners voted unanimously to take it down in June 2020, and crews cut it into pieces that month. Part of it now sits inside the building as a museum exhibit.
