Robert Swartburg gave the hotel its finned tower in 1947 and named it for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Nearly fifty years later Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck gutted it into a white lobby with billowing curtains and furniture set at odd angles. That reopening in 1995 is usually taken as the moment South Beach flipped from a decaying deco district into an international scene.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
