It began in 1941 as a secret school in a disused San Francisco hangar teaching Japanese to Nisei soldiers, men whose families were being interned while they trained. They translated captured plans and talked enemy soldiers out of caves. The school moved here after the war and now teaches dozens of languages to the military, full time, for a year or more at a stretch.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
