It opened in 1919 and was the oldest plant General Motors still ran when the company idled it two days before Christmas in 2008, finishing off the last of the work the following April. Seven thousand people had worked here in 1970. About twelve hundred were left at the end. What happened to that town afterwards: the retraining that did not lead anywhere, the people who drove to Indiana every week to keep a GM job. It got written up as one of the more careful books about what the recession actually did to a place.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
