The Cuyahoga catches fire

An oil slick under a railroad trestle burned for about half an hour and did modest damage, the river had caught fire at least a dozen times before, and 1952 was far worse. But this one made Time magazine, and the embarrassment helped produce the Clean Water Act and the EPA within three years.
