The CSS Neuse, a gunboat in a cornfield

The Confederacy built an ironclad on the Neuse River at Kinston and the river mostly refused to carry it: the Neuse ran aground on its first sortie and was burned by its own crew in 1865 as the town fell. The hull sat in the riverbed for a century until locals raised it in 1963. What survives, roughly the bottom third of a 158-foot warship, fills a museum downtown.
