Where the USS Monitor was built
1862
Continental Iron Works, Greenpoint
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The ironclad was designed by John Ericsson and built here in about 100 days under a Navy contract that would only pay if the ship worked. She launched in January 1862 and fought the Virginia at Hampton Roads weeks later, ending the age of wooden warships.
