The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 damaged the Cathedral of Saint Francis de Sales beyond repair and the Diocese of Oakland spent most of two decades arguing about what should replace it. Christ the Light opened by the lake in 2008, a hull of glass and wood set on a plaza, and it was the first cathedral built entirely within the twenty first century. The complex around it holds the bishop's offices, a conference centre and a clinic that gives free diagnostic care to people without insurance.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
