Waves from the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska arrived four hours later. The first three were survivable and people went back into the flooded downtown to clean up. The fourth was twenty-one feet and killed eleven. The shape of the offshore shelf funnels and amplifies waves here, which makes this the most tsunami-struck town on the American west coast, it has recorded dozens.
