The double leaf bascule bridge across Matanzas Bay was begun in 1925 and opened in 1927, replacing the wooden toll crossing that had carried traffic to Anastasia Island since the 1890s. A pair of marble lions copied from the Medici originals in Florence sit at the mainland end. Declared structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, it was rebuilt rather than replaced, the lions going into storage in 2005 and returning in 2011.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
