1644
Quincy, Massachusetts

John Winthrop Jr. Put up the first iron blast furnace in what became the United States on this stretch of West Quincy, which at the time was part of Braintree. The stream that powered it is still called Furnace Brook, and runs from the Blue Hills across the middle of the city to Quincy Bay. The site itself is now an archaeological one, listed on the National Register.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
