A million acres of water and rock on the Canadian border, with over a thousand lakes joined by portages and no roads. Protecting it split the region for decades, resort owners, loggers and towboat operators against canoeists and Sigurd Olson, who was hanged in effigy in Ely. The 1978 act ended most logging and mining and cut motorboats back to a fraction of the lakes. It is the most visited wilderness area in the country.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
