Richard Kay founded the Guild of the Masques in 1929 and the group incorporated as the Lakewood Little Theatre four years later. In 1938 it moved into the empty Lucier movie theatre on Detroit Avenue, remodelled it for live performance and bought the building outright in 1943. It now runs two stages, galleries and around thirty classrooms on a three and a half acre campus.
