The 1913 silk strike moved to a house in Haledon

Paterson's mayor would not let the striking silk workers hold meetings in the city, so they walked over the line to Haledon, where the mayor was a socialist and the Bottos offered their front balcony. Crowds reported at twenty five thousand heard Big Bill Haywood, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Carlo Tresca and Upton Sinclair speak from it through the spring of 1913. The strike ran from February to late July, roughly eighteen hundred people were arrested, two men were shot dead, and the workers went back with nothing. The house became the American Labor Museum in 1983.
