The bluffs above the Des Plaines were cut open here for a cream coloured limestone sold as Athens marble, the stone in the Chicago Water Tower, Holy Name Cathedral and part of the state capitol. The quarries ran on immigrant labour from Poland, Bohemia, Austria and Italy. In May 1885 the quarry workers struck over pay and hours, the state militia was sent to break it, and three men were shot dead. Chicago's anarchist press called it the Lemont massacre.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
