About 5,000 British troops came ashore on this peninsula before dawn on 12 September 1814 and marched for Baltimore. General John Stricker's 3,200 Maryland militia met them here and were pushed off the field, but they held long enough and hurt the British badly enough to matter. Major General Robert Ross was killed early in the fighting, and his successor, Colonel Arthur Brooke, hesitated. The delay gave Baltimore the time it needed to finish its earthworks, and the fleet's bombardment of Fort McHenry the next night produced the national anthem.
