The Battle of Paulus Hook
1779
Paulus Hook, Jersey City, New Jersey
Paulus Hook was a sandy point held by a British garrison in sight of occupied New York. Major Henry Lee marched about four hundred men down from New Bridge on 18 August 1779, lost his way in the marshes and got in three hours late, then took 158 prisoners in the dark and withdrew without holding the fort. Congress voted Lee a gold medal for it, the only officer below general rank to receive one during the war.
