Three months after Pearl Harbor, and one day after a Japanese submarine shelled an oil field up the coast at Ellwood, air raid sirens went off over Los Angeles at about three in the morning. The city went dark, searchlights crossed the sky, and anti-aircraft batteries fired more than fourteen hundred rounds at something nobody could identify. Nothing was shot down and no enemy aircraft were ever confirmed. Falling shrapnel damaged houses and cars, and several people died, of heart attacks and in traffic during the blackout.
