The apartment behind The Glass Menagerie
1944
4633 Westminster Place, St. Louis, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Tennessee Williams spent unhappy years in a flat on this block and put it on stage almost unaltered: the alley, the fire escape the narrator steps out onto, the sister with her glass animals. He called St. Louis a city he was miserable in and wrote the play that made him from it. His sister Rose, who is Laura, was lobotomised in 1943, the year before it opened.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
