Alice Austen made roughly 8,000 photographs from this Gothic Revival cottage on the bluff above the Narrows, working with glass plates at a time when almost no woman carried a camera into the street. She lived here nearly all her life, thirty years of it with Gertrude Tate. It is the first site in New York City dedicated to a woman to be recognised by the LGBT Historic Sites project.
