The 1916 strike on the range
1916
Virginia, Minnesota
Miners paid by the ton on ore they could not weigh walked out across the whole range, and the Wobblies sent Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and Carlo Tresca to organise them. Company guards and deputies broke up meetings. Two men were killed. The strike collapsed after the organisers accepted a plea to get the arrested miners released, but the eight-hour day and an end to the contract system followed within a year.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
