The 1896 tornado, the deadliest hour in the city's history

About twenty minutes of tornado across the south side and over the river into East St. Louis killed at least 255 people and probably many more among those never counted, which still ranks it among the deadliest tornadoes in American history. It took the roofs off Lafayette Square, threw a section of the Eads Bridge, and drove a two by four through five inches of solid granite.
