The Plainfield tornado, the only F5 ever recorded in the Chicago area
1990
Plainfield, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
On the afternoon of 28 August 1990 an F5 tornado tracked southeast across Plainfield, against the usual northeast motion of violent tornadoes, and killed 29 people while injuring 353. It is the only F5 on record anywhere in the Chicago area and the only tornado in the United States officially rated F5 in the month of August. No photograph or film of the funnel itself is known to exist. The warning failure that day pushed forecasters toward better radar and prediction systems.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
