The Peshtigo fire, the deadliest in American history

On the same night as the Great Chicago Fire, a firestorm crossed 1.2 million acres of cutover pine and killed somewhere between 1,500 and 2,500 people, still by far the deadliest fire in American history. It moved faster than people could run and generated its own wind. Survivors lived by standing neck-deep in the river for hours. Chicago took the telegraph wires and the newspapers, and Peshtigo was largely forgotten within a month.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
