Tewksbury Hospital, the state almshouse where Anne Sullivan grew up

Massachusetts opened this almshouse to hold the poor it did not know what else to do with, and it became the first state institution to take chronic mental illness cases. Anne Sullivan arrived in February 1876, half blind from trachoma, and lived here four years before she talked her way into the Perkins School for the Blind. She later taught Helen Keller. A ward built in 1901 was named for her.
