Helen Keller and the pump at Ivy Green
1887
Tuscumbia, Alabama

Deaf and blind since an illness at nineteen months, Keller was seven and largely uncontrollable when Anne Sullivan arrived. The breakthrough came at the water pump in the yard, where Sullivan spelled the word into one of her hands while the water ran over the other. The pump is still there, and Keller went on to Radcliffe, to a long career in radical politics, and to being the reason most Americans have heard of Tuscumbia.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
