An indoor tennis court built in the 1920s for the family of Jay Gould II reopened in April 1947 as a fight club seating about 2,500. Floyd Patterson, Emile Griffith, Jose Torres and Tony Canzoneri appeared there, Gerry Cooney and Vito Antuofermo made their professional debuts in it, and the DuMont network televised a weekly card from the building from 1949 into 1950. John F. Kennedy spoke there in October 1960 to 4,000 people inside and 8,000 in the street. The last show was in June 1977, the arena came down that December, and a Wendy's was built on the corner.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
