Sumner High, the first Black high school west of the river
1875
4248 Cottage Avenue, The Ville, St. Louis

Opened in 1875, the first high school for Black students anywhere west of the Mississippi, and for decades the only one for a long way in any direction. Chuck Berry, Tina Turner, Grace Bumbry, Robert McFerrin and Arthur Ashe all passed through it. It was moved to The Ville in 1910 because the original downtown site sat next to a morgue and a saloon, which the parents objected to and won.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
