Sugar beets and the co-operative
1973
Crookston, Minnesota
Growers bought the sugar company that had been buying their beets, turning it into a co-operative owned by the farmers who supply it, an unusual reversal. The valley now grows a large share of the American sugar beet crop, harvested in a frantic two-week window when the ground is cold enough to store the beets in the open and not yet frozen.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
