Stapleton Heights, the hill the breweries built
1870
Stapleton, Staten Island
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
German families ran Bechtel's, Bischoff's and the Clifton brewery that became Bachmann's along the Stapleton waterfront from the 1850s, and in 1870 Joseph Rubsam and August Horrmann took over a rival plant to found the firm that outlasted them all. The money went straight up the hill behind the docks, into large freestanding houses looking out over the Narrows. The breweries have all closed. The houses on the hill are the most visible thing left of the trade that paid for them.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
