Opposition to a pipeline crossing under the Missouri just above the reservation's water intake drew thousands to camps on the riverbank, joined by members of some three hundred tribes, the largest such gathering in over a century. Police used water cannon in freezing weather. The camps were cleared in early 2017 and the pipeline was completed.
