The Sisters of Charity opened St. Vincent's Sanitarium in downtown St. Louis in 1858 with four patients and fifteen nuns, treating what the century called nervous and mental disease. In 1895 they moved the whole operation out to a hilltop north of St. Charles Rock Road and put up a building that looks more like a fortress than a hospital. It outlasted the institution and is listed on the National Register. People live in it now, as the Castle Park Apartments.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
