Temescal, the Little Italy of the East Bay

The name comes from a Nahuatl word for a sweat lodge, applied to the creek that ran past a Huchiun village on this ground. Temescal Creek was Oakland's first source of drinking water before the city decided it was a nuisance and buried most of it. Italians from Genoa, Liguria and Piedmont settled along Telegraph Avenue from the 1860s, working the cigar factories and the canneries, and by the 1870s the district was known as the East Bay's Little Italy.
