Southwest 1248 slides off Midway into Central Avenue traffic

On 8 December 2005 a Boeing 737 landing in a snowstorm ran off the end of runway 31C, through the airport fence and into cars on Central Avenue, killing a six year old boy named Joshua Woods. Investigators concluded the crew had not used reverse thrust quickly enough, and found that the lack of an arrestor bed past the runway end contributed. Midway is boxed in by city streets on all four sides and has almost no room beyond its pavement. The FAA approved crushable arrestor beds for four runway ends the following year.
