South San Francisco spells THE INDUSTRIAL CITY across a hillside
1923
Sign Hill, South San Francisco

White concrete letters spelling SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY were set into this hillside in the 1920s, advertising a town that lived on meatpacking and heavy industry. They still read to drivers on northbound Highway 101 and to passengers on flights descending into SFO. The sign joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and the slope beneath it is now a 30 acre city park with about two miles of trails.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
