Somerville City Hall, built as the town's first high school
1852
Somerville, Massachusetts
Somerville had been separated from Charlestown for ten years when it put this building up on Central Hill in 1852 as its first high school. The same walls later held the town's first public library, and the building has been the seat of government since Somerville incorporated as a city in 1872. It has been enlarged several times and was listed on the National Register in 1989, and it remains the only city hall Somerville has ever had.
