Socrates Sculpture Park, built on a dump
1986
Astoria, Queens

The sculptor Mark di Suvero, working with other artists and local teenagers, cleared an abandoned landfill and illegal dumpsite on the Astoria waterfront in 1986 and began showing large work on it. It ran for fourteen years with only temporary park status. When the lease lapsed and a developer proposed luxury apartments and a marina on the site, the city made it a permanent park in 1998. It is the largest outdoor space in New York City given over to sculpture.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
