Snug Harbor, the retired sailors' palace
1833
New Brighton, Staten Island
Dmadeo · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A retirement home for aged seamen endowed by a shipping merchant, at its peak housing a thousand men in Greek Revival dormitories. Threatened with demolition in the 1960s, its rescue was an early test of the city's new landmarks law.
