About 55 pig farms worked the meadows here, fattening hogs on swill trucked out of New York restaurants, and the herd peaked near a quarter of a million during the Second World War. Rendering plants and junkyards came with them, and the town carried the worst smell in the metropolitan area for decades. An ordinance blocked new farms in 1947, and eleven of the survivors were bought out for the New Jersey Turnpike.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
