Scotia, a town the mill owned
1888
Scotia, California

Pacific Lumber owned every house, the shop, the hospital and the newspaper, and for a century Scotia was the last fully company-owned town in California. Its bank and museum were built out of redwood cut to look like classical stone columns. When the company went under, residents were finally offered the chance to buy their own houses.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
