Sandra Day O'Connor's adobe house, taken apart and rebuilt in Papago Park

The future first woman on the Supreme Court and her husband built a low adobe house in Paradise Valley in the late 1950s and made the bricks themselves. A later owner wanted to knock it down for something bigger, so a preservation campaign raised about two million dollars, dismantled the house brick by brick starting in 2007, and rebuilt it in Tempe's Papago Park in 2009 on land the city council handed over by unanimous vote. It is now a public building used for civics programmes rather than a residence.
