Born in El Paso and raised on a hardscrabble Arizona cattle ranch with no running water, branding calves and driving a truck at seven. She finished third in her Stanford Law class and was offered work as a legal secretary. Twenty-nine years later she was the first woman on the Supreme Court, and for a decade its deciding vote.
