More than four hundred men marched onto the green beside the Eastchester church in October 1733 to vote in a contested assembly election, arriving in two columns behind horsemen, trumpets and violins. John Peter Zenger printed a long account of the day in the first issue of his New York Weekly Journal, which is why so much of it survives. His attacks on Governor William Cosby over that election got him arrested, and his 1735 acquittal on seditious libel is the case American press freedom keeps returning to.
