Hudson, founded by Nantucket whalers
1783
Hudson, New York

Quaker whaling families from Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, raided by the Royal Navy during the war, went looking for a port a British fleet could not reach and sailed a hundred miles up the Hudson to find one. They laid out a city on a grid in a year, and it became a whaling port a hundred and twenty miles from the sea.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
