It began with two sawed-off shotguns and a court date Randy Weaver did not show up for. On 21 August 1992 a federal surveillance team on his land was found by the family dog, and the gunfight that followed killed Deputy US Marshal William Degan, Weaver's fourteen year old son Sammy and the dog. The next day an FBI sniper firing at Kevin Harris put a round through the cabin door and killed Vicki Weaver, who stood behind it holding her baby. Harris was acquitted, Weaver convicted only of the missed hearing, and in 1995 the government settled with the family for $3.1 million. The cabin is gone and the ridge is private land.
