Tony Kiritsis and the dead man's wire
129 East Market Street, Indianapolis, Indiana
On February 8, 1977 Tony Kiritsis, behind on the mortgage for seventeen acres he meant to develop, walked into Meridian Mortgage's fourth floor office in this building and came out with the broker Richard Hall, a sawed off shotgun wired from its trigger to Hall's neck. He held Hall for 63 hours, most of them in his west side apartment, while local television and radio covered every turn, and let him go after a news conference broadcast live. A jury found Kiritsis not guilty by reason of insanity. He was released in 1988 and died in 2005. The 2025 film Dead Man's Wire tells the story.
