Smithson grew up between Rutherford and Clifton, and on September 30, 1967 he took a bus out from the Port Authority with a newspaper, a science fiction novel and an Instamatic camera. He got off at this corner and photographed a bridge, a set of drainage pipes and a sandbox as though they were ruins, then published the walk in Artforum that December. Reading a suburb under construction as a landscape already falling apart, the essay became one of the founding texts of land art and pushed him toward the earthworks he is known for.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
