Rhode Island renounces the king

The smallest colony was the first to formally renounce allegiance to George III, two months before the Declaration. It was then the last state to ratify the Constitution, in 1790, holding out for a bill of rights and only giving way when the new nation threatened to treat it as a foreign country.
